At first social media is so much fun.  You meet new people, share interesting insights and links, watch your numbers climb, and get your first “Likes” and comments. Then the glow wears off. Having to post on your Facebook page or Twitter everyday becomes a chore.

So what happened?

What happened is that you made it into work. Maybe your content schedule is bogged down with too much heavy information. Maybe your customer/follower interaction has slowed because you’ve forgotten to keep track of what is relevant. It just doesn’t feel like fun anymore.

Here’s what you can do to make it fun again:

Lighten up! Throw in a fun link at least once a week. Share a humorous anecdote about something that happened over the weekend. Have fun and get human.

Talk to someone. Engagement is what it’s all about. Find someone you have something in common with and start a conversation.

Go back to what got “Likes” or Retweeted. You remember what types of things gained you the most comments and likes. Do that. Start paying attention again.

Take a break. Social media is about engaging with others. If you’re getting burned out with all that socializing it may be time to take a fast from social media. You can go automatic to give yourself a break. Take a week off and let a program like TweetDeck post for you. Remember, going auto is just for your general remarks or shared links. You should be checking in regularly and interacting when not fasting. Don’t look at your profiles at all. If you need to keep an eye on them for customer service purposes elect someone else to monitor for the week.

With your time away from social media you could read the latest journal about your industry or have coffee with a friend. You could put some extra effort into other projects. Or do something totally different. Maybe you’ll even have some funny stories to tell when you get back.
