We live our lives through story. We share tales of our day around the dinner table, tell our colleagues a funny anecdote about our weekend, hold onto the stories of the past…our memories of childhood or our favorite aunt.

What better way to reach people than through story. So this week that’s what it’s all about. This is juicy stuff…let’s dive in!

‘When a user lands on a page, you have three to five seconds

to make your impression’
By Mona Zhang on 10,000 Words

Here are a few basic points that can make all the difference.

Think brevity. Think about how you react to a wordy website
compared to one that is brief and to the point as well as easy
to navigate.

The Power of Your Website’s First Impression [Infographic]

Where do your eyes go when you visit the landing page of a

website? This infographic shares the research. 5.59 seconds
is how long people spent skimming the written content.
Remember what I mentioned above? Keep it brief and get your
core message in at the top. Also, use those bullet points so
people can see what you have to offer immediately.

15 Common Mistakes in Social Media Marketing

Jeff says,

True: you will get more attention for your content, the more
connections/followers you have. Hard truth: connecting to
random people does not get you the kind of attention that
helps propel business.

*Creating a community of targeted fans is the best way to go.

The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.
~ Vince Lombardi

Have you measured your Facebook efforts? Wonder what all those metrics really mean? This week we’ll learn and then find out ways to do something with that knowledge. We’ll also learn how to make ourselves stand out on LinkedIn. Anyone here a Butterfly killer? Dive in and you’ll see who is.

The Most Important Facebook Metric You Choose to Ignore
by Matt Winn on Social Media Today

Matt shares:

Higher reach increases the likelihood of more engagement:

Before anyone can engage with your content, they must see
it first. Reach indicates how many users have a chance to interact
with your messages in the first place, so the higher the reach,
the higher the pool for potentially engaged users.

*How do you increase reach? In the words of the great

Jean Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise, “Engage!”
and you’ll get to where you want to go. Matt has some
other great ideas, too. Check it out!

3 Ways to Optimize Your Facebook Posts

by Tracy Sestili on Social Strand Media

Tracy says:

Just like with your website, knowing where your Facebook

traffic is coming from is important. Too often we refer people
from Facebook to our website and forget to refer them to Facebook.
Knowing where the traffic is coming from will allow you to tailor
your messages better and engage in better conversation.
Tip: If the numbers are low, consider updating your About section
with rich keywords to aid in Google and Bing search. Also consider
promoting your Facebook page on your blog, website, in interviews,
and in your newsletter with Facebook social plugins.

*Have you taken a look at this number on your Facebook

Insights? It’s very interesting to see how people find your page.
Don’t forget to promote your Facebook page on your business
cards and letterhead as well.

Are You Committing Career Suicide on LinkedIn?

By Loraine Antrim on Social Media Today

Loraine tells us to:

Kill Common Titles…For example, my headline says I’m a

“Butterfly Killer.”  Butterflies, you know, that feeling in your
gut before you have to speak in public. As a presentation coach,
I’ll get rid of that fluttering in your stomach. It’s a very unusual
way to say I’m in executive coaching. Spend some time and get
thoughtful…ask friends and colleagues for some suggestions.
A unique title will make you memorable and readers will WANT
to read on.

*Her title may be a bit extreme for you. Just be sure you

know your audience when you choose an interesting title for
your work. You don’t want to put off potential business
partners or clients.

This week it's about getting in line with Google Penguin, the importance of using images and how being a consistent poster makes all the difference in your numbers. So let's do like the penguin and plop in.

How Google Penguin Will Impact Your Social Media Strategy on Social Media Magic,

Social Media Magic says:

You already know that SEO and social media are inevitably linked together. You can’t have one without the other. After all, what’s the point of blogging if no-one will ever get to read your post. This is where the danger comes in. I’ve learned that to make sure you’re on the right side of these happy feet – make these changes now!

•Check that your content has a keyword density of 2% or less.

Any more, and Google Penguin will think you’re keyword stuffing.

*That’s just one of eight suggestions that will help you to focus

your website and get in good with Google Penguin, Google’s
algorithm update. Too many keywords don’t make for easy
or interesting reading either.

Social Media Images: 5 Options [Examples]

by Heidi Cohen

Heidi tells us:

Images, especially photographs, are 2012’s social media darlings

across platforms from Facebook and Twitter to Pinterest, Tumblr
and Instagram. They act like glue to attract attention and keep
participants interacting.

*A picture is worth a thousand words and a picture of words

(those jpeg tiles you see around the social networks) is worth
more shares than quotes in status lines. This is because those
tiles catch our attention with their color and size. So if you’re
going to use these or create some of your own make sure
the text is large enough to be read easily. If people have to click
on it to make it out…well that’s not always going to happen.
My number one rule in any marketing, make it easy for people
to discover, share, buy, etc.

One Simple Secret to Social Media Success:

Post Consistent Content Your Audience Loves
by Beth Kanter on Social Media Today

Beth shares:

You are only as good as your last Facebook post and if you

don’t post consistently, using an editorial calendar – then your
engagement and reach drops. If you are just posting any old
content, not what your audience loves, then you won’t see much
engagement. And, if you don’t bother to look at your data, get
insights, and make changes – you are wasting your time.

*The editorial calendar is a great tool. It helps you plan ahead

and keep consistent. Beth has lots of other helpful links and ideas
in this article. I highly suggest you take a look. The one article
she mentions, 10 Types of Content that We ALL Love!
by Gregory Ciotti, is probably the most helpful link.
